A WORD ON LASER RECERTIFICATION:

Upon purchasing a used or pre-owned laser some laser manufacturers feel a need to charge customers a recertification fee prior to selling them spare parts. In some cases manufactures have requiring the purchase of a warranty as well. Occasionally some customers are lead to believe the recertification must be performed by the manufacturer before a system can be operated. As of our last inquiry, not one state in the United States required this recertification by the manufacturer!

Another approach some laser manufacturers will use once the sales representative is aware your considering a used or pre-owned laser, is to ask for the serial numbers of the laser your considering so they can give you a report on the service history. This report may only show information while the laser is under the original manufacturers warranty. Once the manufacturers warranty expires the current owner has the option to continue with the manufacturer or use an independent laser technician. Any service report from the manufacturer will not show service performed by an independent technician. If you're being told the laser has not been service since the original warranty expired, this may not be true!

Most laser procedures are fee for service. What this means is services would be paid for by the individual that is receiving the procedure. In most cases no insurance companies would be involved. This gives the physician complete control over which laser system to purchase for the best results for their patient. There are many more developments in the laser industry on the horizon. Advanced Medical see's the used cosmetic laser market growing faster than ever. Lower equipment prices have expanded laser use to a broader range of specialties. Professionals from veterinary medicine to family and general practice are all embracing laser technology.

New advances in cosmetic laser surgery have made it possible to safely treat a variety of skin conditions and skin types without patient down time. Year after year we see new procedures being introduced. Those involved in laser surgery research believe the industry is still in its infancy!

Laser hair removal is still a very popular treatment. Manufacturers continue to improve the speed, long-term reduction and versatility of their hair removal equipment.

Diode (800-810nm) and Nd: YAG (1064nm) (1064nm) lasers appear to be the most popular choices for hair removal on skin types 1-6. The Alexandrite laser (755nm) and IPL (intense pulse light) appear to be the lasers of choice for skin types 1-4.

It wasn't long ago that Lumenis was one of the only companies offering IPL or flash lamp technology. Today similar technology is being offered by Sciton, Palomar, Cutera, DermaMed and Candela.

When it comes to non-invasive skin rejuvenation, IPL or other flash lamp technology is the equipment of choice. The versatility of this technology, versus that of a fixed-wavelength laser, makes it even more attractive.

Tattoo removal lasers make it possible perform this procedure without leaving a scar. The older Q-switched Ruby and Q-switched Alexandrite lasers manufactured in the eighties and nineties are still requested.

New systems featuring 532/1064/585/650nm wavelengths can erase just about all tattoo colors, even yellow which is one of the toughest.

Full face laser skin resurfacing utilizing C02 lasers has slowed down considerably, but these are still a great laser for cutting and ablating of tissue and removal of moles and warts.

Erbium YAG lasers are making a comeback. Patients see dramatic results after a number of light ablative resurfacing procedures over time. Superficial wrinkles, age spots, acne scars and hyper pigmentation can all benefit from the Erbium wave length. 

Reliant's Fraxel technology offers another option for facial rejuvenation and periorbital wrinkles, working with a 1550nm wavelength. The difference between the Erbium lasers and the Fraxel lasers can be seen as micro versus macro technology. The Fraxel is much more targeted and precise, with minimal thermal damage or down time.

LED (light emitting diode) and PDT (photo dynamic therapy) equipment are gaining popularity as patients are less willing to tolerate any down time, and the demand for non-invasive cosmetic procedures continues to grow. Advances in technology have made these devices very easy to use.

RF (radio frequency) devices are gaining momentum. Syneron offering a system for hair removal, and Cutera and Thermage targeting skin tightening.
